Neither will likely require sequels or battling aliens. But its also possible that Smiths winning formula needs to be adjusted. At 44, Smith doesnt yet need to retreat from the action-oriented films that made him famous, but he might want to seek out more auteuristic directors who appreciate his fame and know how it can be manipulated in new and different ways. Seventeen years after Independence Day, Smith still lacks a real actor/director partnership like Johnny Depp has with Tim Burton and Leonardo DiCaprio has with Martin Scorsese and the only directors hes worked with more than once are Men in Blacks Barry Sonnenfeld, Bad Boyss Michael Bay, and Gabriele Muccino, who helmed Happyness and Seven Pounds. Turning down Tarantino was a missed opportunity for Smith, especially because it was a calculated risk that someone as established as Smith can easily afford to take. (Plus, can you imagine a better movie role to redeem himself for the yes-sir zen caddy he played in The Legend of Bagger Vance , the movie Spike Lee derided as Driving Mr. Damon?) Smith might also want to recalibrate the way he sells his projects, a full-court press that is high-volume, in both senses of the word. Smith engages talk-show hosts with an intensity that leaves no doubt that I. AM. SO. HAPPY. TO.
Jaden Smith Finds Wisdom in Everybody Dropping Out of School
The movies trailer suggests that Will Smith and his 14-year-old son, Jaden, share equal screen time. Thats not actually the case . The films action is precipitated by the crash of a spaceship on Earth, a millennium after the planet became uninhabitable. Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) are the only survivors of the accident, but Cypher has two broken legs. So Kitai must travel 100 kilometers to recover a homing device that will ensure their rescue. The elder Smiths character is in constant contact with his son, but the movie is very much about Kitais journey; Cypher doesnt even leave the spaceship while they are on Earth. Even though Will Smith is in the movie frequently, Jaden Smith is its star. Will audiences recognize it as an M. Night Shyamalan film? There are no major plot twists, as there was in Shyamalans The Sixth Sense, and because the film stars a 14-year-old, the acting isnt likely to attract comparisons to the filmmakers best-known works. Although the directors films sometimes feature sci-fi twists (The Last Airbender, Signs), After Earth is more of a genre film than anything hes made before. The critics, who have been excoriating the film, say the directors touch is nowhere to be seen in After Earth. Reviewing the film in Variety, Scott Foundas said, Though he shares screenplay credit with Gary Whitta, Shyamalan is clearly a director-for-hire here, his disinterest palpable from first frame to last. Nowhere in evidence is the gifted Sixth Sense director who once brought intricately crafted set pieces and cinematic sleight-of-hand to even the least of his own movies. Will it lose to the second weekend of Fast & Furious 6 at the box office? My colleague Amy Kaufman, whos usually infallible at these sorts of calls, says thats almost a certainty.
Can Will Smith Turn His Son Jaden Into the Next Fresh Prince of Hollywood? (Video)
Jaden tweeted to his more than 4.5 million followers Sept. 12, School Is The Tool To Brainwash The Youth and If Newborn Babies Could Speak They Would Be The Most Intelligent Beings On Planet Earth. Jaden, 15, is considered Hollywood royalty, being a friend of Justin Bieber and dating a sister of the Kardashians, Kylie Jenner, but some people say he is setting a bad example with his comments. He has such a huge group of fans that really look up to him, Us Weekly reporter Jennifer Peros told ABC News. So this isnt really the example you should really be setting. Jaden Smith Dons Disguise While Out with Kylie Jenner Jaden and his sister, Willow, 12, are both home schooled. Jaden had attended the New Village Leadership Academy, a private school his parents founded in California five years ago, until it closed its doors in June because of lack of funding. The academy used study-tech, a teaching method created by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, something to which Will Smith alluded on Live with Regis and Kelly in 2007. There are powerful educational concepts that we believe in, Smith said on the show. But instead of revolutionizing that educational system, the younger Smith seems to be suggesting his Twitter followers abandon it. If Everybody In The World Dropped Out Of School We Would Have A Much More Intelligent Society, Jaden tweeted on Sept. 13. Will and Jaden Smith Discuss New Movie, Meeting the Troops But his philosophical musings have been met with skepticism.
Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith Learned Of Divorce Rumors In Bed
Yet unlike “Bad Boys” or “Men in Black,” in which Smith was the star, the franchise was designed to ensure the ascent of Jaden Smith, not Will. It’s just one of the projects the rapper-turned-movie-star has developed for his children with actress Jada Pinkett Smith and her brother Caleeb Pinkett through his Overbrook Entertainment production company. See photos: ‘After Earth’ to ‘Whip My Hair’: The Smith Family Showbiz Scrapbook Will Smith, who first became Hollywood royalty in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” before moving over to film, has a much smaller part in “After Earth” than his progeny. According to an individual familiar with the planning of the movie, “After Earth” was envisioned as a trilogy. By the time a third installment arrives in theaters, “Will will be too old to be an action star and Jaden will be just entering his prime,” the individual told TheWrap . Almost every element of the movie’s website, from its trailer to its explanation of this futuristic world, begins with Jaden. The marketing campaign for the M. Night Shyamalan directed movie bears a striking similarity to earlier campaigns for Will Smith movies. In 2008, Will Smith appeared in two movies, “Seven Pounds” and Hancock,” that grossed a combined $792 million. Both of their posters consisted of nothing more than Smith’s mug, his name and the movie’s title. His visage, inscrutable yet familiar, distant yet desirable, was all it took to bring fans to the theater. They show him flying through the air with this futuristic wing suit and people forget that is the same kid who was in ‘Pursuit of Happyness.'” Yet if Jaden is the focus of “After Earth,” Will is the supportive parent literally. It is the second films in which he plays Jaden’s father and the third he has produced, the third being none other than the hit “Karate Kid” remake starring Jaden.
Perhaps most ridiculous is the latest one claiming Will and Jada’s relationship has hit rock bottom. Smith opened up on Queen Latifah’s new talk show about how he learned of his wife allegedly seeking a divorce. “Like a year ago, there were all these rumors that me and Jada were getting a divorce. So I get the Google Alert, I’m laying in bed — with Jada. It says, ‘Jada Pinkett Smith files for divorce.’ So I’m like, ‘This is crazy !'” He set the record straight that the couple, who also serve as executive producers on Latifah’s show, have no plans of splitting. He also got candid about his marriage overall. “It’s hard in relationships in general when people expect it to be easy,” said the 44-year-old actor. “It’s not easy. It’s the individual most difficult thing that you’re ever going to do in your life — to try to handle the challenges of life and family and love, side by side for somebody for the rest of your life? It’s a battle.” Also on HuffPost: Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka Celebrity Couples Portia de Rossi & Ellen DeGeneres Celebrity Couples Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green Celebrity Couples
